Challenges

Wireless communications play a critical role in airport management for delivering better information and improving operational efficiency. Due to the special and professional applications, wireless communications system for airports must satisfy the following demands:

1 Practicability for central dispatching, commanding and action. Civil aviation also requires fast, accurate and secure communications dispatching.

2. Flexibility and scalability, allowing the communications system to be upgraded in accordance with the development of the airport.

3. User-friendly, making it convenient for operation, maintenance and management.

Huai'an Airport, a key regional airport approved by the State Council of China, was scheduled to open before October, 2010. Yet its wireless communications system construction encountered the following challenges:

1. The singe base station needs to achieve a full coverage of the airport management area, which means the communication distance must be longer.

2. There will be follow-up upgrading for the airport; therefore, the system should have a sufficient capacity for further expansion.

3. Clear voice transmission in highly noisy environments.

4. Airport communications demand high level encryption.

5. For higher operational efficiency, various voice call types, including all call, group call and private call, are all needed.

6. The command center should be equipped with a high-performance continuous recording system to ensure that every call is recorded.

7. Information in display must be readable even under extremely strong light.

Solutions

To answer all the challenges above, Hytera designs a DMR solution for Huai'an Airport, a DMR conventional digital communications system with  two four-channel carriers and a capacity of 200 terminals and can support follow-up extension. Hytera DMR terminal PD780, mobile MD780 and transceiver RD980 are used for daily communications. A high-performance continuous recording system is set up in the commanding center to record all the calls of the four channels.
